This Puma-made AS Saint-Étienne “Cake Rocher” jersey dates from the 1985–1986 season, a landmark campaign that saw the club reclaim its place in French football’s top division after two years away.
Competing in Division 2, ASSE dominated Group A that season, finishing top of the table and earning automatic promotion to Division 1. The shirt is instantly recognizable thanks to the striking red Cake Rocher sponsor emblazoned across the front. The Renaison-based confectionery company became the club’s main sponsor in 1984, succeeding KB Jardin. After appearing on Duarig kits during Saint-Étienne’s first Division 2 season, the Cake Rocher logo continued under Puma, who took over as kit manufacturer for the 1985–1986 campaign.
Among collectors, Cake Rocher-era jerseys are especially prized due to their scarcity. This is particularly the case for examples in size 4x5, the largest size offered to the public at the time. Even more uncommon is the fold-down collar, a design feature typically reserved for match-worn shirts, as most retail versions from that season were produced with a V-neck collar.
